PC Locs interviewed Mark Oliver from Curtin University about PC Locs’ FUYL™ Cell.

1.       What prompted you to consider storage and charging solutions for the laptops?

An increasing number of [students] are bringing electronic devices, ranging from smart phones to laptops, onto campus and often require a power point to charge their device during the day. Current lab environments and teaching spaces have limited numbers of power points meaning clients are either unable to charge their device or have to unplug existing equipment (computers and printers) to access power points. FUYL Cells (Fill Up Your Laptop) have been installed in major labs and teaching areas to allow clients to securely charge their devices while in classes and return to collect once charged.

2.       How did you come to the conclusion to use PC Locs and the FUYL Cells?

After significant research into laptop locker solutions at other universities, conference centres and hotels we found that the Powerhouse Cube provided all the features and functionality we required, with a local supplier and reseller rather than sourcing interstate or overseas. We have worked with PC Locs for many years for other products for securing computer workstations.

3.       What did you like best about the FUYL Cell?

Build quality is very good (and important) but the most useful feature is the electronic key system that allows Security Officers to open lockers to retrieve items (where a client has forgotten their PIN) and if it is the wrong locker they can re-lock the locker with the electronic key which retains the original clients PIN rather than having to reset it or leave the locker unlocked.

4.       How are the FUYL Cells currently being used?

FUYL Cells are installed in open access labs, in faculty computing areas and are being rolled out to Library areas on our major campuses. The lockers are client managed (they can use the locker and set their own PIN) and can only be opened by Security Officers by providing photo ID and a detailed description of the items stored in the locker. Security Officers also randomly sweep the FUYL Cells for lockers that have been accidentally (or deliberately) locked with no items inside.

5.       How have the students responded to the laptop program?

Demand prior to advertising was reasonable, demand since advertising both with posters and announcements in the Student Portal has increased and we are currently installing two more FUYL Cells into faculty areas and purchasing more for Library areas to meet demand.

6.       What are the future plans for Technology at Curtin University?

Cloud computing, server and desktop virtualisation, Microsoft Surface, unified messaging and numerous other project both in house and with our strategic partners.
